LES Mananov will often stand in his Brunswick East factory and ponder the wonders of the 120-year-old knitting machine producing his trademark beanies now stocking Melbourne’s most hip boutiques.
The 65-year-old veteran ragtrader lovingly restored the machine - made in England in 1890 to produce baby singlets - he found in several parts in an unused knitting mill.
According to Alasdair Mackinnon, creative director of Mananov’s new fashion label Otto and Spike: “Les likes to stand in front of it and hum.”
The machine not only symbolises Mananov’s reuse-and-recycle ethic, it represents an ingenious knack for adaptation that has seen him survive the ragtrade’s tumultuous changes wrought by cheap imports.
